Award Purpose

To recognize an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, communication, and dedication to advocating for a strong, responsible, and sustainable oil and natural gas industry on Colorado’s Western Slope.

This award honors champions of the energy industry, whether from within the industry, the broader community, or public service, who actively work to promote understanding, support balanced energy policy, and strengthen relationships between industry and the public.

Eligibility

Nominees may be:

• Industry professionals including employees of operators, service companies, or contractors
• Community members such as landowners, educators, civic leaders, or business owners
• Elected or appointed officials who support balanced, pro-energy policy and engagement

Nominees must:

• Be or have been active within the Western Slope region of Colorado

Award Criteria

(Scored out of 100 points)

1. Advocacy and Public Outreach (30 points)
   • Actively promotes the value and benefits of the oil and gas industry to the public or policymakers
   • Engages in educational outreach, media, or public speaking to inform others about industry contributions and practices
   • Builds trust and promotes civil discourse around energy issues
2. Leadership and Influence (25 points)
   • Takes initiative to lead or support projects, legislation, policy work, or partnerships that advance industry goals
   • Influences policy, public opinion, or industry direction in a meaningful way
   • Serves as a visible and respected advocate in their professional or community role
3. Community and Industry Collaboration (20 points)
   • Demonstrates commitment to building bridges between the oil and gas industry and local communities
   • Promotes collaboration across sectors such as education, agriculture, business, or government
   • Encourages open dialogue and mutual benefit
4. Stewardship and Responsibility (15 points)
   • Advocates for or implements responsible energy development practices
   • Supports environmental, safety, or land stewardship initiatives aligned with WSCOGA values
   • Contributes to long-term sustainability of the Western Slope’s energy landscape
5. Character and Professionalism (10 points)
   • Upholds high standards of integrity, respect, and professionalism
   • Acts as a role model for positive advocacy and ethical leadership

Nomination Materials

Each nomination should include:

• Completed nomination form
• Nomination statement (500–1000 words) explaining the nominee’s contributions and alignment with the award criteria
• Supporting materials (optional):
  • Letters of support
  • Media coverage, op-eds, or video links
  • Project summaries or outcomes
  • Testimonials or community feedback

Selection Process

• Nominations reviewed by WSCOGA Awards Committee including former Pioneer of the Piceance Recipients, WSCOGA Board of Directors and staff
• Each nominee scored according to the above criteria
• Committee may request additional information or conduct brief nominee interviews
• Recipient announced at the WSCOGA Sips & Scholarships event each year
